Improving the Modeling of Sea Surface Currents in the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea Using Data Assimilation of Satellite Altimetry and Hydrographic Observations

Sea surface currents are often modeled using numerical models without adequately addressing the issue of model calibration at regional scale. The aim this study is to calibrate MIKE 21 ocean for Persian Gulf and Oman improve sea obtained from model. was performed through data assimilation with altimetry hydrographic observations variational assimilation, where weights objective functions were defined based on type optimized metaheuristic optimization methods. According results, generally led results closer observations. This reflected in an improvement about 0.09 m/s currents. It also allowed more accurate evaluations parameters, such as Smagorinsky Manning coefficients. Moreover, root mean square error values between satellite control stations assimilated varied 0.058 0.085 m. We further showed that kinetic energy produced by could be used generating electricity near Jask harbor.
